Mr. Cooney Obituary

Michael E. Cooney, Jr., 91 years young. A longtime Lynnfield resident died peacefully on March 28, 2020 in his Gerry Road Home with his loving wife Ruth by his side.  Michael was born December 15, 1928 in Northampton, MA to Dr. Michael E. Cooney and Mary (McClosky) Cooney.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Margaret "Peggy" Peters, his beloved daughter Susan. As well as his six siblings: Eleanor, Louise, Mary, Alice, Ann and Robert. He is survived by his wife Ruth Flynn Cooney of Lynnfield, his son Michael Cooney and his wife Danielle and his grandson Colin Cooney all of Denver, NC.

After graduating Northampton High School, Michael headed to Boston and his future. After four years at Schillinger School of Music (Now Berkley), Michael entered the newly formed Air Force, starting as an arranger and composer. He quickly worked through the ranks reaching the level of Assistant than Primary Band Leader of the 20th Air Force Band. ("The President's Own") Upon discharge, Michael enrolled at Boston University, where he completed his master's degree in Music Education. Mr. Cooney was the creator and Director of Music Education (Later Performing Arts) for the Town of Lynnfield for 30 years. Often referred to as "The Pied Piper of Lynnfield", Michael instilled positivity and possibility into each and every future musician regardless of age and ability. Music in the Lynnfield Public Schools was nothing less than legendary. Simultaneously, he also brought his talents to Bentley College, where he was Director of Jazz for 10 years. Michael was also a performer and business owner. He was Assistant Conductor and Piccolo-Flutist for the Boston Civic orchestra for 32 years. He was the founder of the Middlesex Wind Ensemble. Mike was a woodwind specialist and freelancer throughout Boston and the North Shore. He was sole proprietor of NorthEast Winds, a professional flute & piccolo importer from 1975-2010. Mr. Cooney was a member of the Lynnfield School Committee, president of Business Travels & Cavalier Case Covers.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, and for the safety and well being of Michael's friends and family, his funeral and graveside services will be private. A Celebration of Michael's Life may be scheduled at future time.

Michael was an avid reader and teacher. He also loved travelling, skiing and the ocean. Michael was the Captain and proud owner of the 80+ foot charter vessel "Scotia" for 25 years.
