Obituary of Arthur L. McManus

Mr. Arthur L. “Art” McManus, age 72, of Lynn, died suddenly Friday in Union Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Germaine “Geri” (Regan) McManus, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage. Born in Somerville, Art was the oldest of four children of the late Arthur L. and Helen (Leahy) McManus. He attended St. Ann’s Elementary School, was a graduate of Boston College High School Class of 1956 and went on attend Salem State College where he graduated with the Class of 1962. He later obtained Master’s Degrees in 1964 and 1968. Art lived in Somerville until 1964 before moving to Swampscott and finally settling in Lynn. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves. Prior to his retirement in 2001, Art spent over 40 years as a Social Studies and Latin Teacher at Lynnfield Middle School. During that time, he was the president of the Teacher’s Union in Lynnfield. He had previously worked at the Northeastern Junior High School in Somerville. In earlier years, Art was a well known basketball and soccer player and was Team Captain of the Salem State Soccer Team and a member of the Salem State Men’s Athletic Association. In later years, he was the organizer of the Agganis Girl’s Soccer Games as well as the Bay State Games and a longtime sportswriter for the Lynn Daily Item. Following his retirement, Art took on many jobs, previously working for the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home and most recently, as deliveryman for Seaside Florist. He thoroughly enjoyed his trips to Bermuda, reading, going to his grandchildren’s games and was an avid sports fan. In addition to his wife, Art leaves his children, Michelle Freeman and her husband Matthew of Milton, Cmdr. Mark W. McManus, USN and his wife Gage of Portsmouth, RI, Elizabeth Downie and her husband John of Dorchester, Brendan J. McManus and his wife Grace of Lynn, Rebecca D’Entremont and her husband Scott of North Andover, Michael D. McManus and his wife Kerri of Georgetown and Rachel Yaffe and her husband Scott of Peabody. He was the loving grandfather of Katherine, Kerry, Nate, John, Brendan, Emma, Ryan, Luke, Mary, Maya, Emily and Anna. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Art’s Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Wednesday at 9:30AM followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Pius V Church at 10:30AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. Visiting Hours Tuesday 3-8PM. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Art’s memory may be sent to the Agganis Foundation, 85 Exchange St. Suite 218, Lynn, MA 01901.
