Debbi Peterson's Memories

The Uniqueness of Gary Millen

Gary was a man with great integrity and he really was "one of a kind"!  He never minced his words and he didn't base his thoughts or actions on what his peers would think or do.  Nope, Gary had a moral compass inside him that he never wavered from.

There was no pretense with Gary, you always knew where you stood with him. His steadfast advice and friendship were always true and real.

My first memories of Gary go back to grade school when we would ride our bikes through the neighborhood.  Years later, I broke my nose while we were playing basketball at the Center School playground.  If that wasn't memorable enough, I have a scar on my right eyebrow from a gymnastics calamity!  What were we thinking....me, running as fast as I could; jumping off the springboard; over the buck with my arms outstretched like a swan dive....and him, agreeing to catch me mid-air!!!?!  Wow, if that doesn't prove the trust I had in Gary, I don't know what else can.

Gary's ability to make a difference in people's lives started at a young age and continued into his adult life.  I don't think it's any surprise that he modeled his life after his mentor and dear friend, Mr. Rodan.  Like his mentor, Gary went on to inspire a new generation of student athletes.  Because of the connection with his students and the community, it's not surprising that his untimely death not only shocked the community but rallied them to create “The Gary Millen Foundation”, which built a sports stadium in his honor.  To this day, Gary's spirit lives on through the foundation, which is still in existence.  Money is still being raised for new projects at the Kennett High School in North Conway, New Hampshire where Gary taught, coached and left an impression.

Humankind needs more Gary Millens, who make a real difference in their sphere of influence.  The world, our world, is a better place for having known this unique human being.

I'll always remember Gary- I have fond memories and the scars to prove it.
