RUSSELL H. SHURTLEFF

1925 - 2018


SHURTLEFF, Russell H. Age 93, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke on September 29, 2018. He was the loving husband of the late Mary E. (Hickey) Shurtleff. Born in Hanover on August 26, 1925, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Mignon L. (Osborne) Shurtleff. Russell was raised in Hanover, and was a graduate of Hanover High School, and upon graduating he entered the US Army and served his country during W.W.II. Russell furthered his education after the war by graduating from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor's degree in education in 1954. He was a high school teacher with the Lynnfield Public School System, teaching for 33 years. After his retirement, he then moved up to Maine, and resided there from 1987 - 1996, and then moved from Maine to Mansfield. While in Mansfield, he volunteered his time at the Mansfield High School and also at the Senior Center of Mansfield. He was an avid cribbage player, and was known to share his fresh baked chocolate chip cookies with others. Russell is survived by a son, Richard Shurtleff and his wife Eileen of Littleton, MA; a daughter, Kathy Steinem and her husband Robert of Colrain, MA; 6 grandchildren, Erik, Chris, Beth, Denis, Vanessa and Whitney; 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Gertrude Hassett, Evelyn Lowe and Donald Shurtleff. Funeral services will be held at the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 N. Main St., MANSFIELD on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial to follow at Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield
